We might know what we want to accomplish or what would make us happier, healthier, or wealthier, so why aren’t we able to follow through and make it happen?
Our daily lives are filled with so many things to remember, tasks that need to be completed, and activities and events to attend that unless we have a concrete goal that is then broken down into specific action steps, we might find ourselves spinning our wheels and spending time on things that are not ultimately moving us towards the outcomes we desire.
Also, did you know that a study led by psychology professor in California showed that by writing down your goals you are 42 percent more likely to achieve them?
These goals can be related to your business, your health, or any other area of your life that you’d like to develop. I’ve put together a guide to help you set concrete goals and develop the actions and accountability that will help lead you to success.
It should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic/Relevant, and Timely. An example of a smart goal would be:
1. Create your goal using the SMART goal formula.
It should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic/Relevant, and Timely. An example of a SMART goal would be:
Specific: I’d like to write a book.
Measurable: I want to write at least 1,000 words a day for three months.
Attainable: I have hired and training employees and established systems within my business, so my time is freed up to focus on writing.
Relevant: I have a passion for what I’m writing and think my book will be of value to my target audience.
Time-bound: I’ll start writing the first week of June and finish my first draft by October.
2. Determine how you will stay accountable.
Will you hire a coach, join a mastermind group, ask a co-worker or friend? List a few options and how they could hold you accountable. Maybe a bi-weekly or monthly phone call to check in on your progress, a virtual meet up, or in person gathering to discuss the each other’s goals?
If you’d like to talk to me about how I can help as a health and/or business accounatbily coach, feel free to reach out to me and we can chat.
3. Identify your goal’s action items and add them to your calendar.
Breaking down actions into the top three most important tasks of the day helps prioritize all the actions needed to accomplish your goal. Schedule these tasks during the days and times that you have the most energy and focus to accomplish your goal and set deadlines.
4. Set aside 30 minutes each week on your calendar to evaluate your own progress.
This should be in addition to scheduled check-ins with your accountability partner. If you find you are not sticking to your action items, evaluate what the distractions or roadblocks could be and adjust accordingly.
5. Create an inviting work space or home environment.
Your surroundings have a lot to do with your mind set, mood, and motivation level. A beautiful, welcoming space free of clutter and distractions will help you stay positive and focused on the personal or professional development needed to achieve your goals.
6. Set aside time for self-care.
No goal is worth achieving if you are too burnt out and exhausted to enjoy the final product of your success. Along with scheduling time to work towards your goal, set time aside on your calendar to recharge. Go to the spa and have a facial, sit in the infrared sauna, do some yoga, or go for a walk. Not only will this help you enjoy the fruits of your labor by maintaining your health but it is in fact the launchpad need for reaching your goals in the first place. Here is a self-care tool kit that can help with not only your motivation, but overall mental health.
